Loyalty and Commitment – a journey through the Virtues
“Commitment is knowledge within itself. You don’t commit to get the knowledge. When you commit, knowledge comes to you. If you can commit and hold on to it, there is nothing more you have to learn. When you commit, things will happen which will shift in you, change you, stop you, make [tempt] you to disobey, revolt. Such opportunities will come to you. Even if you forget the truth that is the basis of you, if you continue to be committed, that’s all it takes. Commitment does not “begin” anything. Commitment is the end in itself.
There is nothing beyond commitment, there is nothing before commitment, and there is nothing in commitment, because commitment is complete within itself.”

Sat Nam,
This week we explore loyalty and commitment. Interesting that I use the word explore as loyalty and commitment are not something we explore it either is or it isn’t.
Commitment is surrender into your choice, trust in yourself that you made the right decision and the integrity of keeping to your word. Once I commit I commit. But on the big stuff it’s getting me to the point of commitment I struggle with as I find it difficult to surrender.
A perfect example of this is this week when after 17 years in my old car, I bought a new car. The surrender into my choice was an anxious one, did I do the right thing , did I choose the right car, will I like the new car, will I miss my old car… etc etc. It was surrendering to the commitment of my choice I struggled with. Now I’m happy with my choice and love my new wheels, but the experience showed me my patterns of resisting surrender are still there.
Loyalty is standing by your belief or a person even when it’s tempting to do the opposite.
Both loyalty and commitment are cut from the same cloth and start with ourselves. In order for us to be loyal and committed to others or a project etc, we must first be loyal and committed to our values and our souls needs.
Kundalini Yoga teaches us loyalty and commitment with every set and meditation. By just turning up to a class we are showing loyalty and commitment to ourselves and our wellbeing. I often say the best way I know to show love to myself is to keep up my practice. The tools of Kundalini Yoga such as a 40 day meditation really test our commitment and loyalty. Through this process the ego will tell us this is boring, to hard, unnecessary etc in order for us to give up. But I say from experience, the satisfaction in successfully completing this type of challenge is so fulfilling, an incredible learning ground about how I deal with loyalty and commitment and an excellent tool to strengthen these virtues.
What is your relationship with loyalty and commitment?
