A new Year generally comes with lots of new year resolutions and I’ve seen for myself and allot of people I know, they start to peter out towards the end of January.
A while back I stopped making big resolutions and just did what it was I wanted to do at whatever time of the year. No great announcements, no pledges, I just began. Whether it was to get healthier, walk more, do more yoga, meditate, start a new job, start a business, lose weight, quit smoking, write a blog, go on holiday, whatever, I found by just doing it, it tended to take on a life if it’s own and happen. Each time I made a big pledge and let everyone know, I found I put allot of pressure on myself and eventually my good intentions dwindled away. Don’t get me wrong I feel it’s great to have goals and a plan, but often we spend so much time working out the logistics of what we want, talking about it, preparing and procrastinating, we never really get started or we “try” and lose momentum. So often I hear myself and others say I’m trying. Allot of the time trying can be like dipping your toe in, but not really committing and when we do what it is we want to do we actively commit to the process.
Just doing it is a daily commitment that if kept up, becomes a habit and no longer feels like a tall order but part of our daily routine. In yogic science they say ‘your habits define you”, so it’s really important to make sure the habits you keep are how you want to live. Yogi Bhajan says do something for 40 days to break a habit, do something for 90 days to create a habit, do something for 120 days to confirm the habit and do something for 1,000 days to master the habit. A great way to learn commitment to the doing, is to start with a 40 day meditation. It really takes you through the process of commitment with all its ups and downs, and once this challenge has been faced you can go onto 90 days etc to really master the art of commitment.
So now we’re in a new year or really at any time of the year, just do what it is you want to do and keep committing to doing it every day. Start and see where it takes you, learn from the experience and keep going. Sometimes just taking the first steps without too much pressure or preconceived ideas, leads to the best results.
