Yoga of Awareness

Sat Nam,

Until I’d consistently hit the yoga mat, I didn’t really know myself and what I was capable of. I knew the basics, favourite food, clothes, colour, basic likes and dislikes, how to do my job, take care of my home etc, but my capacity for endurance, the depth of love for myself, others and life, a conscious awareness of myself and who I am, my level of creativity, my purpose in this world, what drives me, these are some of the things I really started to learn about myself on my mat.

Kundalini yoga is the yoga of awareness and it can be really confronting. It tests me at all levels and has surprised me many times as to what I can endure and what comes up. When I’m in a posture and I think “I can’t do this for one more second!” and then I go on to challenge myself and say end up holding my arms up for 10 minutes or longer, or do 10 extra sit ups or frogs than I thought possible, I’m that excited and proud of my achievement and I’m also often astounded that my capacity and strength is far greater than I gave myself credit for. This yoga gives me an acute awareness of my body and its strengths and limitations, my mind and how it can either work with me or control me, my heart and its capacity for love and compassion for myself and others and my incredible strength of spirit. In this space of awareness I can feel my power on all levels, whether it be physically, from my heart, my mind or my soul.

That’s one of the many things Kundalini Yoga teaches me. It gives me an awareness that I am far stronger and more powerful than I think and I take this valuable information out into the world where I use it to face life’s challenges.
