Summer Solstice is the longest day of the year, the one day of the year…
Yoga helps to give your body a reprieve…
Sat Nam,
How is everyone feeling? It’s such crazy times and everything is changing so quickly.
I was saying to a friend how in such a short time we have had to adapt to a new way of living and it’s surreal that talking about social distancing and lockdown has become the norm.
Change and uncertainty are two of the biggest factors that cause stress and anxiety.
When stressed your body goes into a state of high alert. Your muscles may feel tense, you may notice you are clenching you’re jaw more than normal, your breath is more shallow, your chest is tight, your mind is working overtime and you may find it’s more difficult to relax.
When I was suffering from debilitating panic attacks my body was in this state pretty much 24/7 and it’s exhausting!
When I discovered yoga, for the first time in a very long time my body got a reprieve from vigilantly waiting to fight or flight and I felt relaxed. I’ll never forget my first class, the peace that came over me was heaven!
As we are in a time of high alert the reprieve that yoga can give your body is so important for your physical and mental health. It allows the body to let go and surrender to the moment, for your muscles to relax and your mind to slow down.
As you tense your body in a posture and then release with an exhale, even if it’s for only a few seconds your body gets to relax and the more you practice the more reprieve it will get.
Never has it been so important to keep up with your practice and for most of us never have we had so much time to do so!
There’s a saying “Keep up and you’ll be kept up” and I remind myself of this everyday.
