Change the pattern on your mat change your pattern in life

Sat Nam,

I’ve been thinking about our patterns this week.  Each of us has a unique pattern on how we move through life and what I’ve found interesting is the way you embrace the good and the way you deal with issues in life is more than likely the same pattern you have when navigating through the postures on your mat.

When I started practicing yoga I was suffering from debilitating anxiety and panic attacks and there was a desperation in me to heal and belong.

I practiced at least five times a week and if the teacher told me to hold my arms up for ten minutes I held them up until I was shaking!  I had such fear that if I didn’t keep my arms up I would fail, I wouldn’t heal and I had to heal otherwise how would I ever belong.

My desperation on the mat to succeed and belong was also reflected in my desperate need in life to succeed and belong.

Over years of practice I’ve noticed my pattern on the mat has changed.  I’m no longer desperate to succeed and belong, I now show up because it’s what I want to do, I do the postures to my capacity on the day and I am so much more aware of my truth.  There’s an ease to my practice and I am consistent, committed and compassionate about where I’m at and it reflects on my pattern in life.

The aha moment I had from this is change my pattern on my mat, change my pattern in life.

So why the mat?  Because as Kundalini Yoga is the yoga of awareness it will lead you to your truth and as the old saying goes the truth will set you free.

it’s also a safe space to practice the change you want to achieve, where you can teach your body and mind how to respond to challenges the way you would like rather than reacting the way you always have and the way that hasn’t served you.

So next time you’re on your mat I invite you to be aware of your patterns and reflect on how these patterns may be similar to your patterns in life.

If you’re someone that constantly gives up too easily, pushes yourself too hard, doesn’t put much effort in, is too hard on yourself, whatever your thing is, be aware of what your pattern is.  it’s through awareness that you can change.

Use the mat as an opportunity to challenge any parts of your pattern that don’t work for you and create a new pattern for yourself that does, then observe how changing the pattern on your mat affects the pattern in your life.
