The Second Body – The Negative Mind

This week we are working on the second body in our ten body series, the Negative Mind.
The Negative Mind contrary to a lot of belief plays an important role in our lives and is a necessary component of our thinking.
Think of the Negative Mind as your risk assessor. It’s what stops you walking out onto the road without looking, stepping off a cliff, investing in that Nigerian Scammer or going on a boat trip without taking a life jacket. It is the first port of call our mind goes to to assess risk and when balanced it is our guardian.
It’s also the first mind that kicks in in the morning when you wake up. It’s really important to nip these everyday negative morning thoughts in the bud (unless there’s just cause) such as I’m tired, I wish I didn’t have to go to work, I hate Mondays, etc. If left unchecked they can have a snowball affect leading to a negative day, week, year, life because the Negative Mind out of all the minds is the one we tend to take most notice of and let control us.
Remember Eeyore the donkey from Winnie the Pooh? He’s is a perfect example of an unbalanced Negative Mind always looking at the doom and gloom.
The Negative Mind used to be my personal nemesis. All my life I’ve suffered from anxiety and the Negative Mind would go into overdrive sharing with me all the “what ifs” and illuminating all the bad things that could happen. These days because of my yoga practice it doesn’t happen so often, but when it does I’ve learnt to take myself to a class, meditate or go for a walk to slow down this mind so I can see the wood from the trees.
The mat is a great place to learn about your Negative Mind. If out of balance it may tell you a simple exercise is too hard, you don’t have the strength, you will hurt yourself when the risk is low and it’s by recognising it’s self talk and mastering your mind rather than it mastering you that you will learn to control it rather than it controlling you.
Next time you’re on your mat have a listen to your self talk and see how the Negative Mind presents itself to you.
