Let’s talk about Vulnerability, Equinox, 40 days of Wholesomeness and the Byron Retreat
Sat Nam,
What a beautiful week that was! I had my first swims of the season and although freezing it was exhilarating! Nothing like jumping into 14 degree water to wake me up!
So this week I would like to talk about vulnerability. When I was in my 30s I was living in London, suffering immensely from debilitating panic attacks and floating anxiety and I ended up having a nervous breakdown. I knew I had to come home and it took everything I had to get me on that plane. On the way back I had a stopover in Hong Kong where my family live and I popped in for a visit. I was in a bad way, jittery and well out of sorts, and my brother in law said to me that he could see a crack in my armour. Well I was horrified that my armour was broken and consequently spent the next few years trying to repair the crack. You see I didn’t like the crack because it meant I was vulnerable and being vulnerable scared the life out of me because it meant I could get hurt. What I didn’t realise then was that crack was the first step to my awakening. The true essence of me, my light started peaking through and the light of my source was now able to shine in. It wasn’t until I started practicing Kundalini Yoga that I really began to open up. The yoga itself pushed me to be vulnerable with the challenging and sometimes out there postures, the strong breathing techniques and powerful meditations. I was forced to get over myself and surrender to the posture, because when I didn’t it was a battle that fatigued me to the bone. The more I practiced the more open I became and I felt myself change. I was hard and distant with my armour on and as bit by bit it began to come off, my heart opened and I started gravitating toward people and life and people and life were gravitating towards me.
Brené Brown teaches us that vulnerability is the foundation of connection. We can not connect to ourselves, to our source or anyone else if we hide our light. In order to connect we must remove our armour, trust in ourselves and the universe, surrender to what will be and allow ourselves to be open and seen. This a a scary concept because we risk being hurt but it’s the most liberating thing we can do for ourselves.
The best place I’ve found to learn how to remove my armour is on my mat. Try it for yourself. Next time you’re in class and you feel resistance, surrender to the posture or the meditation, befriend your vulnerability and allow yourself to flow. Connecting with yourself and others really is the best feeling in the world!
Just a reminder, we have Equinox this Saturday, 22 September at 6.30pm with Yogi Maya and Josh. This is going to be a fantastic event! There will be yoga, meditation, gong, didgeridoo and drums to celebrate the official start of Spring. This also marks the beginning of our 40 days of Wholesomeness in the studio. The package includes unlimited yoga, wellness workshops and discounted treatments such as float tanks and massages. This is a perfect way to get healthy as we ready ourselves for the summer months. I’m looking forward to our beautiful Byron Retreat, The Power of ‘I am’ with myself, Yogi Maya and Lisa Samson held in the magnificent space of Temple Byron in Byron Bay. If you have never been to Temple Byron, this place is something to be experienced! The grounds are covered in crystals, Buddha’s and fauna and the vibration of energy permeating from here is just sublime! A perfect setting to work on discovering the true essence of our being.
We will be working on the Power of each of our ‘I ams’ individually and collectively as a group using the transformative technology of Kundalini Yoga and meditation. We will also share some fun activities to help us explore our Sat Nam (our truth) and help us realise our unique gifts.
As teachers we all offer our own unique gifts and insights to share with you on the journey of discovering your ‘I ams’ and the fact that this retreat will fall on 11.11 a gateway for transformation makes what we we will create as a group even more powerful!
The retreat is non residential and we are happy to help make suggestions for accommodation near Temple Byron which is a ten minute drive from the centre of town. We will be providing dinner on the Saturday night at one of Byron’s favourite restaurants.
This retreat is sure to book out, so get in quick!
